Italo Calvino’s ‘Invisible Cities’ is a collection of surreal short stories about cities visited by the traveler Marco Polo, places where people act, depict and consider things that make no sense or are impossible.
The starting point idea inspired by the book was one of memory and the way we perceive the city. Polo describes the city he has seen through memory and imagination. “Memory is changeable, not trustworthy. And yet the form of things can be discerned better at distance, in time as well as in space.” My idea was to depict the city landscape in a way that while moving through it the picture would break down and dissolve in front of your eyes.
